November 3 - November 11, 2025Dublin, Ireland is leading the way in using artificial intelligence to make cities work better. The city is working with a company called Bentley Systems and a technology company called NVIDIA to create something called a digital twin. Think of a digital twin as a computer movie of your city that shows everything happening in real time. Dublin's digital twin brings together information from many different parts of the city and shows it all in one place.
One of the coolest parts of Dublin's project is how it keeps people safe. The city uses AI agents, which are smart computer programs, to watch roads and sidewalks. These AI agents use special cameras and sensors made by a company called VivaCity to see what is happening on every street. The AI agents are looking for dangerous moments, like a car getting too close to a person on a bike or a delivery truck stopping where it shouldn't. When the AI agents spot something unsafe, they tell city workers right away, and the workers can take action to prevent accidents.
Bentley and NVIDIA are sharing their technology with other cities too. They made something called the NVIDIA Blueprint for smart city AI that is like a recipe cities can follow to build their own smart systems. Many cities in the world are now using this recipe to create their own AI agents that help with city problems. This technology can be used for traffic management, safety, and even helping firefighters do their jobs better.
In November 2025, Dublin showed off their work at a big conference called the Smart City Expo World Congress, which happened in Barcelona, Spain. Three other cities came to show their own AI projects too. Raleigh, North Carolina in the United States is using an AI agent that watches video from cameras on city streets. This AI agent looks at the video and automatically creates reports about what it sees. Raleigh is using this to help fix problems faster and make streets safer for people walking and biking. The city is also using AI to figure out when to turn streetlights on and off, which saves money and helps the environment.
Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is also using similar AI technology to help manage traffic and improve city services. Another company called Milestone Systems is adding generative AI to their video system, which means the AI can actually write reports about what it sees in videos. This technology was trained on 75,000 hours of traffic video so it knows a lot about city streets. With generative AI, the computer can understand videos better and explain what is happening in simple words.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is working on something even bigger called the Rio AI City project. Instead of just using AI for traffic and safety like other cities, Rio is building a whole city that uses AI for everything. Rio is testing special laser-based internet that can connect buildings and devices without regular cables. This high-speed internet is being used to power the city's AI systems. A company called Tapestry, which is supported by Google, is helping Rio plan the power infrastructure, which is all the electricity systems that will run the AI technology. Building these power systems is complicated because AI computers use a lot of electricity.
Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates is also working on urban planning and city improvements. The city is learning from other smart city projects around the world about the best ways to use technology. Cities are realizing that they need to share ideas and work together to solve big city problems.
All of this technology needs lots of computer power, so many companies are building new data centers to support smart city projects. Data centers are huge buildings filled with computers that store information and run AI programs. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta are spending billions of dollars to build new data centers that will power AI technology for cities around the world. These data centers are being built in places like Arkansas, Texas, Indiana, and even on military bases.
What is really exciting about these projects is that they are not just using AI to fix problems after they happen. Instead, AI agents are helping cities predict problems before they occur and stop them from happening. This makes cities safer, cleaner, and better places for people to live. As more people move to cities, these smart city projects will become more important. Experts predict that by the year 2050, two out of every three people in the world will live in cities. That means we will need smart AI agents to help manage traffic, safety, and all the other things that make cities work better for everyone.
