This weekly update shows major changes happening in workplaces across the United States because of AI technology. Big companies are making tough choices about their workers.

Goldman Sachs reported that AI could affect 6 to 7 percent of American workers. However, they believe this change will be temporary. New jobs will likely replace the ones that disappear. Right now, only about 9 percent of companies are actually using AI in their daily work.

J.P. Morgan found something worrying. College graduates are having a harder time finding jobs. Their unemployment rate hit 5.8 percent in March, the highest in over four years. This is unusual because college graduates usually find jobs more easily than others.

Tech companies are feeling the biggest impact. After ChatGPT was released, three major tech areas stopped growing: cloud computing, web search, and computer systems design. Microsoft laid off up to 16,000 workers partly because AI made their work more efficient. Amazon's CEO also warned that AI will reduce their total number of workers.

Some companies are taking extreme steps. One CEO fired nearly 80 percent of his staff because they wouldn't learn to use AI fast enough. Klarna, a Swedish company, used AI to do the work of 700 customer service agents. Salesforce now has AI doing 30 to 50 percent of their work.

But there's good news too. Experts predict AI will create 170 million new jobs by 2030. Companies like Ikea are focusing on helping workers learn AI instead of replacing them.
