Workforce Impact (from business side) Weekly AI News
August 4 - August 12, 2025This weekly update brings important news about how AI agents are changing workplaces across America and beyond.
Businesses in the United States cut more than 10,000 jobs in just the first seven months of 2025 because of AI technology. Companies are now using smart computer programs to do work that people used to do. Big companies like Shopify told their workers they won't hire new people if AI can do the same job.
The technology sector got hit the hardest with over 89,000 job cuts this year. Since 2023, more than 27,000 tech jobs disappeared because AI agents became better at doing computer work. Young workers just finishing college are having the toughest time finding jobs.
Entry-level jobs for new graduates dropped by 15% compared to last year. These are usually the first jobs people get after college. AI is really good at doing basic office work like collecting information and making simple reports. Many managers now say they can hire fewer entry-level workers because AI agents can handle these tasks.
Some companies are trying to help their workers learn about AI instead of replacing them. Debenhams, a big store chain in the UK, spent £1.35 million to teach over 1,000 workers how to use AI tools. They want their employees to work alongside AI agents instead of competing with them.
Experts from JPMorgan bank warn that white-collar workers (people who work in offices) might face bigger problems in future economic downturns. Unlike past recessions, AI could make it harder for educated workers to find new jobs. This is different from before when office workers usually kept their jobs during tough times.
