Agentic AI Changes How Universities Work

This week brought big news about how colleges and universities are using agentic AI to help students and staff. Agentic AI is different from regular chatbots because it can plan steps, remember things, and make decisions on its own. Think of it like having a helpful robot assistant that can actually do things instead of just answering questions.

Universities are already using agentic AI in real ways. Some schools have AI agents that automatically answer student questions about courses and money for school. Other universities are testing AI agents that can help guide students through classes and suggest ways to improve their learning. At places like Ohio State University, teachers are thinking about agentic AI as a tool to help students learn better, not just as a tool to save time.

UConn Creates New Training for Engineers

One of the most exciting announcements came from the United States, where the University of Connecticut started a new program called AEGIS. AEGIS stands for AI-Enabled Guided Intelligent Systems, and it teaches engineers how to use agentic AI in their jobs. The program is special because it's not just for computer science students—it's for all kinds of engineers, including those who work with chemicals, machines, and buildings.

The program will start in Summer 2026 and was created with help from big companies like Pratt & Whitney and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Students in AEGIS will learn how to design AI agents, use them in real workplace situations, and explain both the good and bad parts of agentic AI to their bosses and coworkers. Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut pointed out that since August 2024, his state had almost 11,000 job postings asking for AI skills. This shows how important it is to train workers right now.

The Big Problem: Not Enough People Know About Agentic AI

One huge problem emerged this week: there are not enough people who understand agentic AI. According to a recent study, 16% of people around the world use AI tools regularly, but only a tiny fraction know how to build and manage agentic workflows. Even worse, 90% of companies expect a serious skills shortage by the end of 2026 when it comes to agentic AI workers.

Companies are responding by offering special training courses. The Boston Institute of Analytics in Boston, Massachusetts announced its Agentic AI Course and Generative AI Course to help professionals learn these new skills. These courses teach people about multi-agent orchestration, which means managing multiple AI agents working together.

Universities Struggle With Big Questions

While universities want to use agentic AI, they face tough questions. Some schools worry that AI agents could complete entire classes for students, which would be like cheating. Teachers are asking important questions: If an AI agent can do all the homework, what is the student actually learning?

Another problem is that many universities don't have the right systems in place yet. They need better ways to protect student information, make sure AI agents give correct answers, and create rules for when and how to use agentic AI. Only some of the biggest universities feel ready to use agentic AI safely and fairly right now.

New AI Tools for Students

Some companies are building agentic AI systems just for education. For example, Element451 showed off a system that helps colleges attract new students and guide them through applying to school. This AI agent can send messages to students, help them with financial aid, and keep track of everything across different computer systems.

Why This Matters for Students

These changes mean that students will see AI agents in their daily college life very soon. AI might help them figure out what classes to take, give them tutoring when they need help, and even help them organize their study time. However, students will also need to learn how to work well with agentic AI and understand what these systems can and cannot do.

Teachers are starting to change how they teach because of agentic AI. Instead of just giving students information, teachers will focus more on teaching students how to think critically and work with AI tools. This is a big change in how education works.
