Workforce Impact (from employee side) Weekly AI News
August 4 - August 12, 2025This weekly update shows major changes happening to workers because of artificial intelligence (AI) across the United States.
Job losses are hitting hard this year. Companies cut more than 10,000 jobs in July 2025 alone because they started using AI instead of people. The technology sector got hit the worst, with over 89,000 job cuts announced so far this year.
Young workers are struggling the most. People aged 20 to 30 in tech jobs saw their unemployment rate jump by almost 3 percentage points since early 2024. Recent college graduates are having an especially tough time finding work, with entry-level job postings dropping 15% compared to last year.
Companies are changing how they hire. Many businesses like Shopify and McKinsey are using AI to do work that junior employees used to handle. At the same time, job descriptions mentioning AI have increased by 400% over two years.
But some young people are fighting back. About 68% of Gen Z job seekers say AI makes finding work harder, but they're learning to work with AI instead of competing against it. They're trying to become "AI force multipliers" rather than letting AI replace them.
Experts disagree about the future. OpenAI's Sam Altman thinks Gen Z will be the "luckiest generation" and that AI will create exciting new jobs. However, some predictions suggest AI could replace half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. Goldman Sachs estimates that AI will eventually displace 6-7% of all US workers over the next decade.
