Scientific Research & Discovery Weekly AI News

September 22 - September 30, 2025

This weekly update highlights major breakthroughs in AI agent research and scientific applications. AI agents are smart computer programs that can think, plan, and complete tasks without human help.

A major research report published this week shows that AI agents are becoming mainstream in business and science. The report from ResearchAndMarkets.com found that one in ten large companies is already using AI agents. Even more exciting, over 50% of big companies plan to start using AI agents within the next year. This rapid growth shows that AI agents are moving from research labs into real-world use.

Google Cloud released results from a massive research study involving 3,466 senior business leaders from 24 different countries. The study, conducted between April and June 2025, found that 52% of large companies now use AI agents in their daily operations. The research identified a special group called "agentic AI early adopters" - companies that put at least 50% of their future AI budgets toward AI agents. These early adopters are seeing much better results, with 88% reporting positive returns on their investments compared to 74% for all companies.

The study revealed that most organizations are using multiple AI agents working together. About 39% of companies have more than 10 AI agents running at the same time. These agents handle different jobs like customer service, marketing, security, and technical support. The research shows that AI agents work differently in different parts of the world - European companies focus on technical support, Japanese companies use them for customer service, and Latin American companies use them mostly for marketing.

Scientists are using AI agents to tackle serious environmental and health challenges. Coca-Cola announced a partnership with MIT to use AI agents to fight a disease called "citrus greening" that is destroying orange groves in Florida. This disease has cut orange production in the United States from 5.5 million tons in 2015 to just 2.2 million tons in 2025. If this trend continues, oranges could become extinct. The AI agents will analyze decades of farming data to find patterns and solutions that human researchers might miss.

In space science, researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi developed an AI model that can predict dangerous solar storms up to four days in advance. Solar storms are bursts of energy from the sun that can damage satellites, disrupt GPS systems, and even knock out power grids on Earth. Having four days of warning gives scientists and engineers time to protect important technology. The AI agent works like a junior researcher, scanning solar activity data and spotting patterns that would take humans much longer to find.

The technology industry is making it easier for more people to build and use AI agents. Algolia launched Agent Studio this week, a new platform that lets organizations create AI agents with search capabilities. This tool is designed for businesses that want to build smart applications that can find and use information automatically. The platform makes it possible for teams without deep technical knowledge to create their own AI agents.

Researchers are also improving how AI agents work together and share information. Cognizant AI Lab announced advances in "decision AI" that helps AI agents collaborate better. When AI agents can share what they learn and work as a team, they can solve much more complex problems. This is especially important in areas like supply chains, where many different departments need to work together.

The research shows that AI agents are not just getting better at individual tasks - they are becoming better at autonomous learning and problem-solving. Modern AI agents can gain new knowledge on their own and figure out solutions to problems they have never seen before. This makes them valuable for scientific research, where new discoveries often require looking at information in completely new ways. As more companies and research institutions adopt AI agents, we can expect to see faster breakthroughs in medicine, environmental science, and technology.
