Companies must follow global privacy standards like GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA when deploying AI agents.

Australia is taking a different approach compared to the EU's comprehensive rules. Instead of immediate binding laws, Australia released proposed guidelines in September 2024 with 10 mandatory safeguards for high-risk AI applications. These focus on human oversight, transparency, testing, data governance, and accountability throughout the AI lifecycle. Australia's government believes this phased approach will allow innovation while ensuring safety.

Experts emphasize that businesses cannot wait for perfect regulations before implementing AI governance. Ciarán Bollard from The Corporate Governance Institute warns that "AI is already shaping how companies operate, and without internal safeguards, boards are exposing themselves to regulatory, ethical and reputational risks". Companies must create their own ethical frameworks and risk management processes immediately rather than waiting years for international agreements.

The week's developments highlight the urgent need for clear standards and frameworks to govern AI agents. As agentic commerce expands rapidly, users and merchants need to understand how transactions can be resolved when problems arise.
