Infrastructure & City Planning Weekly AI News

November 24 - December 2, 2025

Cities around the world are preparing for a big future powered by artificial intelligence and new data technology. In the United States, several major cities are working on plans to make sure AI grows in a responsible way. Portland, Oregon joined cities like Paris, France and Phoenix, Arizona to promise that AI development will be good for the environment. This agreement was launched at a big meeting of mayors in Rio and focuses on helping local leaders understand and manage AI growth. Meanwhile, Tennessee released its first AI action plan, which outlines how the state will use AI across government, schools, and businesses. The plan focuses on four important areas: starting AI test projects, building safe technology infrastructure, training workers for AI jobs, and creating clear rules for AI use. Across the United States, there is also a massive building boom happening with data centers - huge buildings filled with computer servers that power AI and other internet services. These data centers need enormous amounts of electricity and water. In California, data centers used about 10.82 terawatt-hours of power in 2023, enough to power one million homes. Many cities are racing to become homes for these data centers because they bring jobs and money, but they also create big challenges for power grids and communities. In New York City, officials announced new smart city pilot projects that use AI and sensors to help improve city services and safety. These projects show how cities are experimenting with AI technology in real ways to make daily life better.
