Mux

Operate video ingest, streaming and playback through APIs or MCP.

Use Mux’s managed video infrastructure and agent interfaces to ingest videos, manage assets and supply playback to applications.

Your integration checklist

What you need from your owner
Create an account and select the intended environment, token permissions and billing plan. Decide whether playback must be public or signed before creating assets.
Authentication
REST uses HTTP Basic authentication with a token ID and secret. The hosted MCP endpoint https://mcp.mux.com supports OAuth environment authorization or Basic credentials. Keep API secrets server-side.
Your first task
Ingest an authorized sample video, retain the asset ID, wait for ready status and test the intended playback policy.
Billing & payment
Usage pricing separates video input, storage and delivery; quality and resolution affect charges. A limited free plan and paid usage/credit plans are available. Additional processing features can add their own costs.
Agent payment support
Not verified. Programmatic usage does not establish autonomous checkout support.
Operational limits
Tokens act within their selected environment. MCP can execute the full permitted SDK surface, including destructive operations. API rate limits and asynchronous processing apply; creation success alone does not mean a video is playable.

When to choose this service

Choose Mux when an agent needs operated video encoding and delivery infrastructure.

Encoding capacity, stored media and distributed streaming delivery require running infrastructure. Generating player code cannot provide these resources.

Suggested workflow

  1. Confirm the environment and the minimum permissions required. Choose video quality, retention and playback access before upload.
  2. Retain the asset ID and wait for ready or error state through bounded polling or webhooks. Avoid duplicate ingest after a client timeout.
  3. Test playback as the intended viewer, then measure storage and delivery usage independently from upload count.

Acceptance checks before real work

  • Verify that private content cannot be opened through an unintended public playback ID.
  • Do not allow a cleanup task to delete assets outside its approved set.
  • Check readiness and an actual playback result before publishing a link.

If the workflow fails

Retrieve the existing asset after an uncertain response. Inspect ingest errors, pace API retries after limits refill, and reconcile deletion or creation state before repeating a write.
