Twilio Programmable Messaging

Send authorized messages and track delivery through telecom infrastructure.

Use Twilio’s Messaging API and SDKs to submit messages and inspect delivery state. Its documentation MCP server helps discover API schemas but does not execute sends.

Your integration checklist

What you need from your owner
Create and verify a Twilio account, configure an eligible sender or Messaging Service, and complete destination-specific registration where needed. Establish recipient permission and billing before live sends.
Authentication
Twilio APIs support HTTP Basic authentication with account credentials or API-key credentials. Use dedicated production API keys with the appropriate account context; documentation MCP access needs no credentials and cannot send messages.
Your first task
Inspect a known message record or send one approved test message to a controlled recipient, then retain its SID and track the final delivery state.
Billing & payment
Message usage, carrier fees and sender-number charges contribute to cost. SMS is charged by segment, so message length and encoding matter. Trial accounts have restricted recipients, allowances and an expiry.
Agent payment support
Not verified. Programmatic usage does not establish autonomous checkout support.
Operational limits
Sender and destination requirements, account restrictions and throughput limits apply. A queued or accepted message is not proof of delivery. Recipient consent and opt-out handling remain part of the application workflow.

Reconcile message identity before retrying an uncertain send

Editorial recommendation · Reviewed 2026-10-20

When to choose this service

Choose Twilio when an agent workflow must reach an authorized recipient on a supported messaging channel and observe the delivery outcome.

Telecom routing, sender provisioning and carrier delivery are external capabilities. Writing message text or HTTP code cannot deliver it to a phone network without a connected service.

Suggested workflow

  1. Resolve the approved recipient, sender and account. Check message content, segment implications and the allowed sending window before submitting.
  2. Submit once and store the returned SID with the workflow’s own action ID. Track callbacks or query the message record until a meaningful delivery state is available.
  3. Reconcile delivery with the intended business outcome. Record failures and opt-outs so subsequent agent actions use the latest recipient state.

Acceptance checks before real work

  • Verify sender and destination eligibility before a live call.
  • Keep queued, sent and delivered states distinct.
  • Check existing message records after a network interruption before creating another send.

If the workflow fails

Inspect the SID, status and error details before retrying. Fix sender, recipient or content issues first; an uncertain send needs reconciliation to avoid duplicate contact.
