DURABLE WORKFLOWS & SCHEDULING · FOR AI AGENTS

Inngest

Resume agent workflows after failures and long waits.

Use Inngest to coordinate durable steps, retries and event-driven waits, with API, SDK, CLI and MCP access to inspect or operate deployed workflows.

Your integration checklist

What you need from your owner
Create an Inngest account, integrate the SDK and deploy or connect the application code that executes your functions. Scope agent access to the intended environment.
Authentication
Cloud MCP supports OAuth or an API key, with environment and read/write permissions. Signing keys are not accepted as Cloud MCP API keys.
Your first task
Inspect a known development run and its trace, then trigger one bounded test event in the intended non-production environment.
Billing & payment
Plans meter function runs and step executions, with separate resource allowances. Count steps as well as runs when estimating cost; application hosting and model-provider usage can add separate charges.
Agent payment support
Not verified. Programmatic usage does not establish autonomous checkout support.
Operational limits
Your hosting environment still imposes runtime limits. Retries do not make arbitrary external side effects exactly once. Invoking or rerunning functions can repeat real actions.

Make each external side effect recoverable before enabling retries

When to choose this service

Choose Inngest when a workflow must retain progress across failures or wait for another system. Identify its side effects and completion conditions before adding retries.

The external dependency is durable orchestration state, scheduling and recovery infrastructure. An in-memory agent loop loses that state when its process stops.

Suggested workflow

  1. Separate the workflow into meaningful steps and choose stable identifiers for events and external operations. Keep changing inputs inside the appropriate durable steps.
  2. In development, interrupt a run after a completed step and inspect how it resumes. Check whether an external action already occurred before retrying it.
  3. Set concurrency and retry bounds, then monitor traces in the intended environment. Require the approved workflow for reruns that can send messages or change money or data.

Acceptance checks before real work

  • Confirm the environment on every operation that can start or change a run.
  • Check both orchestration status and the external system’s resulting state.
  • Estimate usage from the number of runs and steps rather than assuming one workflow equals one billable execution.

If the workflow fails

Use the existing run and trace to locate the failed step. Resolve ambiguous external outcomes before rerunning; retain the original operation IDs for reconciliation.
