Mapbox Geocoding

Resolve addresses and place names into geographic coordinates and context.

Call Mapbox’s Geocoding API for forward or reverse address lookup in agent workflows that use a Mapbox map and comply with the selected result-storage mode.

Your integration checklist

What you need from your owner
Create a Mapbox account and access token, configure billing and decide whether results will be stored. Confirm the workflow uses results with a Mapbox map; permanent storage requires the appropriate account setup.
Authentication
Supply a valid Mapbox access_token parameter to the geocoding endpoint. Use a token configured for the intended application and keep token-bearing request URLs out of shared logs.
Your first task
Resolve one known address with country or proximity context, then check the candidate address and coordinate order on the intended Mapbox map.
Billing & payment
Geocoding is billed by requests, with allowances and volume rates on the pricing page. Autocomplete can generate a request per keystroke. Select temporary or permanent geocoding deliberately before estimating batch cost.
Agent payment support
Not verified. Programmatic usage does not establish autonomous checkout support.
Operational limits
Temporary results cannot be cached. Permanent results can be stored and require a valid payment method or enterprise contract. Geocoding v6 does not provide point-of-interest data. Account rate limits can return 429, and ambiguous inputs need result review.

Set the result-storage policy before building an address lookup workflow

When to choose this service

Choose Mapbox Geocoding when an agent needs maintained geographic address data for a Mapbox-based application and the requested result use fits the provider’s restrictions.

The maintained geographic index and geocoding service provide external location data. Parsing an address or generating plausible coordinates does not establish where that address actually resolves.

Suggested workflow

  1. Define country, place type and storage requirements. For complete-address batch work, avoid unnecessary autocomplete requests and choose the correct storage mode.
  2. Inspect candidate address, geographic context and longitude/latitude order. Escalate ambiguous matches instead of silently choosing the first result.
  3. Use results with the required map and persist them only when the selected mode permits it. Track request volume and pace batches to account limits.

Acceptance checks before real work

  • Check the candidate location against the intended region.
  • Verify storage permission before adding results to a database or cache.
  • Use a separate point-of-interest search product when the task needs businesses or venues.

If the workflow fails

For no result or an ambiguous match, refine the address and geographic context. Back off on rate limits; do not repeatedly submit the same uncertain input or retain temporary results as a workaround.
