Ably AI Transport

Stream agent responses across reconnecting clients and multiple devices.

Use Ably AI Transport SDKs and managed channels to deliver agent output, resume interrupted streams and replay retained conversation events to authorized subscribers.

Your integration checklist

What you need from your owner
Create an Ably account and application, configure channel rules and retention, and integrate the transport SDK with your model workflow. Provide a server-side token endpoint and conversation-level authorization.
Authentication
Keep the Ably API key on trusted servers. Issue scoped, expiring tokens to clients; authentication for the request that starts the agent is a separate application responsibility.
Your first task
Stream one test response to two authorized clients, disconnect one during generation, then reconnect it and compare the recovered response.
Billing & payment
Usage counts published and delivered messages, channel time and connection time. Subscribers and history retrieval affect message totals; model-provider inference is a separate expense.
Agent payment support
Not verified. Programmatic usage does not establish autonomous checkout support.
Operational limits
Channel and connection rates, message size and retention limits apply. Ably transports output; the model, agent hosting and orchestration remain your responsibility. Long-term conversation storage needs an explicit design.

When to choose this service

Choose AI Transport when agent responses must survive client network interruptions or reach multiple devices while generation continues.

The dependency is a maintained realtime delivery network with channel state and replay. Producing text or opening a local socket does not keep that response accessible across disconnected devices.

Suggested workflow

  1. Assign a stable conversation channel and request identifier. Bind each client token to the permitted conversation and keep the agent-start endpoint separately authenticated.
  2. Run a controlled response with two clients. Interrupt one connection, reconnect it, and compare the final content and ordering with the uninterrupted client.
  3. Store the completed response and replay position together. Tune batching and retention against expected disconnect duration, fan-out and delivery cost.

Acceptance checks before real work

  • Try subscribing with a token from another conversation and require denial.
  • Distinguish transport recovery from restarting a failed agent process.
  • Check message counts under multiple subscribers rather than estimating cost from model tokens alone.

If the workflow fails

Use the last stored replay position to recover missing output. If the retention window has elapsed, load the durable conversation record; do not repeat external tool actions merely to regenerate a lost stream.
