If you own an e-commerce business you know email marketing is a must for connecting with customers and boosting sales. So you probably also know it can be a bit overwhelming. This is exactly where Klaviyo promises to come in and carry the load. Klaviyo has some serious Next Level e-commerce features which we'll definitely cover in this step-by-step tutorial as well as some areas where there's room for improvement. 

We'll also run through how to set up your account, how to create automated email flows, and we'll even help you set up your first campaign. We'll also share some top tips for keeping your emails out of the spam folder, so look out for those. All right, let's get to [Music]. 

First things first, let's get Klaviyo installed on your Shopify store. Head over to the Shopify App Store, type in Klaviyo, and you'll see two options pop up: Klaviyo email marketing and SMS and Klaviyo reviews. For now, let's focus on the main app and hit install. We'll cover the Klaviyo reviews app later, so make sure you stay till the end. 

Once Klaviyo is installed, you can sign up for a new account for free in a few simple steps. Alternatively, if you already have an account, Klaviyo will open in a new window. We love that Klaviyo automatically syncs customer data, order history, and profile information from Shopify, allowing you to create more personalized and targeted campaigns with the data you already have. 

Now that you've linked Klaviyo to your Shopify store, it's time to set up your sender information, which is what your customers will see when they receive your emails. You'll find this in the settings tab in the bottom left corner. We recommend using a

Branded email address with your domain instead of a generic no reply address. Why? Because a personalized email encourages two-way communication and makes your brand feel more approachable. In fact, receiving replies from your subscribers not only helps build relationships, it can also improve your email deliverability rate. I know, pretty cool right? That equals more of your emails landing in inboxes and not the spam folder.

Next, in the same tab, head to domains where you can set up your sender domain to improve the chances of your emails getting delivered. You'll need to ensure that you've properly set up domain authentication by configuring SPF and DKIM records in your domain's DNS settings. This is really important, so don't overlook it. If that sounds a little technical, not to worry, we've dropped a link in the description below to guide you through the process.

Next up, website tracking. It allows you to monitor key customer behavior on your site, such as which products visitors are viewing and when items are added to their cart. Now, to enable website tracking, go to email, then tracking in your Klaviyo account settings. Copy the tracking code provided and paste it into your Shopify store theme file. Once that's added, we recommend testing that it's working properly. 

Here's a quick way to do that: head on over to your website in incognito mode and view a product and add another item to the cart. Then go back to your Klaviyo dashboard and check that this activity was properly recorded. 

Let's move on to contacts. Super important! Before you import your contacts, make sure you do some housekeeping. That is, remove outdated.

Or inactive contacts maintaining a high quality email list will not only reduce bounce rates but will also protect your sender reputation. 

Next, head to the lists and segments section via the audience tab. Here you can create a new list if you don't have one already. Upload your contact file in CVS format and map your fields correctly like so. Now, once that's done, we highly recommend segmenting your contacts based on engagement level or purchase history. This allows you to create targeted personalized campaigns that speak directly to your specific audience groups. 

Finally, if you're collecting contacts from regions like the EU, make sure your list complies with GDPR regulations. This means gaining consent for communication, usually through a checkbox in your signup forms or double opt-in. You can find all these settings in the same list and segments tab. 

Now it's time to build your brand library to give your emails a consistent look. Upload your brand's logo and set your fonts and colors under images and brands via the content tab. Once these elements are in place, they'll automatically be applied to your email templates, giving you a polished and professional design every single time. 

But it doesn't stop there. You can also create and save custom email templates and sections, which is especially helpful when you want to standardize elements like headers and footers. 

And now let's move on to email automation or flows, as Klaviyo calls them. This is where the magic really happens. It might take a bit of time to set them all up, but once you do, they'll continue working for you in the background, engaging your customers.

Okay but for now let's quickly set up a flow together. A welcome flow is one of the simplest yet most effective automations. Head to the flow section in Klaviyo. You'll see the option to create a new flow. Click on that and choose welcome series. This will bring you into Klaviyo automation flow builder where you can set up your email sequence. 

First let's choose the list that will trigger the flow. In most cases you'll want to select your primary email list where all your new subscribers get added. So when someone signs up this flow will automatically kick in and send them a welcome email. 

This next step is where you can really make it your own. You can customize your welcome series and your flow builder deciding how many emails you want to send, the timing between each email, and what content to include. For example you can start with a warm welcome email right away and then follow up with the discount offer a couple of days later. 

Remember this is your chance to give new subscribers a great first impression. It's also an opportunity to really hone in on your brand values, share your unique selling points, and highlight what sets you apart from the competition. 

When it comes to creating the discount Klaviyo lets you choose between a static or unique coupon code. I recommend going with a static code for your welcome series something simple like welcome 10. This makes it super easy to convert new customers and you can still set it.

As a single use code to ensure it's exclusive to new customers. Next up let's tackle another must-have automation: abandon cart flows. This is a lifesaver because let's be real, cart abandonment happens a lot. In fact, as many as 70% of online shoppers leave without buying. This flow will help you bring these customers back. 

In return to the flow section and create a new flow just like we did before. This time select the abandoned cart template from Clo's pre-built options. You'll be happy to know they've done a lot of the heavy lifting for you, so you won't be starting from scratch. Just decide on how many reminder emails to send and when to send them. That's it. 

For example, you could send the first email a few hours after cart abandonment, then a second one the next day, and maybe a final one 72 hours later. The idea is to remind them about the product without being too pushy. And here's a game changer: you can use Clo's content blocks to automatically pull in the exact items your customer left behind. This adds a super personalized touch that increases the chances they'll come back and complete that purchase. 

One important thing to keep in mind though is if you're looking to send this type of cart abandonment email to all potential customers, including non-subscribed contacts, Klaviyo must classify it as transactional. This means it cannot contain any marketing content or incentives like discounts or free shipping. The email can only act as a reminder to purchase. But don't worry, this doesn't mean you can't offer enticements later. They just need to be added on further into the workflow. Just be aware that these.

Types of special offer emails can only be sent to subscribers because Klaviyo classifies them as marketing. Beyond email, adding text messages to your abandon card flow can be a great option depending on your industry. This multi-channel approach can make a huge difference, but as we said earlier, try not to be too pushy. You don't want to make them unsubscribe. 

What's really cool is that Klaviyo offers AB testing within flows, allowing you to test different things like subject lines, email content, and send times. This way, you can continually figure out what's working, what's not, and get better results over time. 

All right, now that we've covered flows, it's finally time to set up your first campaign with Clayo. Now, unlike flows, campaigns are one-time emails sent to specific segments of your list, like newsletters or one-off promotional emails. For this, proper segmentation is crucial. You don't want to overwhelm your audience with too many emails. It's all about striking the right balance to keep your subscribers engaged without making them hit that unsubscribe button. 

Head over to the campaign section, then click on create campaign. Name your campaign, confirm some key details like email subject line, sender address, and preheader. Choose your audience by selecting an existing segment or create a new one based on criteria such as engagement level and purchase history. You also have the option to exclude certain audiences, giving you full control over who receives your email. 

Now, it's good practice to exclude recent purchasers or people who have already received an email from you in the past day or so. This helps maintain a

Healthy email frequency and avoids overwhelming your subscribers. Klaviyo has a ton of templates to choose from and you can filter them by type like outreach promotions or even seasonal holidays. Once you've selected your template, you'll be directed to Clo's drag and drop editor where you can pull the elements you need into your design. As always, we recommend keeping your design clean and simple. Less is more here, guys. To streamline the process and stay on brand, you can utilize save sections as mentioned earlier to make it quick and easy to add footers, headers, or other reusable content blocks. 

Once you're happy with the design, make sure it looks good in both desktop and mobile devices by sending yourself a test email. Then, before you hit send, double check everything from your subject line to your sender name. Finally, all that's left to decide is whether to send it immediately or to schedule it for later. We recommend scheduling your campaign for a time when your audience is most likely to open their emails. 

Now, for those with more than 12,000 contacts, Klaviyo even offers a smart send feature. This AI powered tool determines the optimal send time for each recipient, improving open rates and engagement. You can enable this feature in your campaign settings before scheduling an email. 

Okay, now that you've learned how to get started with your e-commerce email marketing, it's also worth checking out CIO reviews, a powerful tool that can complement your e-commerce email marketing strategy. This app helps you gather customer feedback directly on your product pages, and of course, positive reviews can really help.

Convert potential customers into paying ones. To set this up, head on over to the Shopify App Store. Search for Clav, your reviews just like before, and install the app. Once installed, you can customize the look of your review forms and set notifications for when new reviews come in.
